Jakarta is set to become an ocean of batik this Friday, with the city administration officially calling upon all residents to wear batik in recognition of UNESCO's decision to add the traditional dyeing technique to its list of elements of intangible cultural heritage.

The administration sent a formal request to all government offices and private companies in the city to ask their employees to wear batik on Oct. 2, the date when UNESCO will officially announce the listing, deputy governor for culture and tourism affairs, Aurora Frida Tambunan, said Monday.

"We hope this will inspire many city residents to join in and show their support for the listing," she told reporters.

Aurora said she also expected to see many students and those working in service and tourism sectors wearing batik.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has also asked Indonesians to wear batik on Friday.

The listing, which will give the age-old tradition of batik technology some degree of protection under a UNESCO charter, will be made official at an event in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, between Sep. 28 and Oct. 2.

To celebrate the listing, the Jakarta Culture and Tourism Agency has also arranged a number of special offers for city residents.

Head of the agency, Arie Budhiman, said all residents could enter any city-run museums between Oct. 3 and Oct. 7 free of charge, provided they were wearing batik outfits.

"This is our way of appreciating them," Arie said.

Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta is also ready to give free admission to visitors wearing batik on Oct. 5.

Meanwhile, Ancol recreational complex in North Jakarta will give visitors wearing batik a 40 or 50 percent discount on admission to selected facilities.

The government's call to wear batik has gained significant support from the Internet community and business people.

As of Monday evening, for example, more than 3,000 people had joined a Facebook group "Mari Bersama Pakai Batik Tgl. 2 Okt 2009" (Let's wear batik on Oct. 2, 2009).

Indonesian Shopping Center Association chairman Stefanus Ridwan welcomed the call and said he would forward it on to members so they could ask their employees and tenants to wear batik on Friday.

Batik is a wax-resistant dyeing technique used on textiles.

Due to modern advances in the textile industry, the term "batik" is also used to refer to fabrics incorporating traditional batik patterns that are not necessarily produced using traditional batik techniques.

Historically, Indonesians, wore batik on formal occasions.

Nowadays batik has become increasingly popular even among younger generations, with batik factories producing more wearer-friendly and fashionable batik clothing.

In Indonesia, batik is said to have originated from Javanese courts, but several other regions have their own styles of batik.

Batik is widely worn in neighboring countries Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand and has also been discovered in archeological remains from ancient Egypt dating back to the fourth century BCE

Yahoo has cashed out of its investment in China's leading e-commerce site, Alibaba.com.

The sale announced Monday is expected to generate a pretax windfall of about $150 million for Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo. The Internet company had owned a 1 percent stake in Alibaba.com.

Yahoo invested about $100 million in Alibaba.com as part of an initial public offering completed in November 2007. The shares have soared since then, and Yahoo decided it was time to capitalize on the run-up.

Yahoo still holds a roughly 40 percent stake in Alibaba.com's owner, the Alibaba Group.

In a statement, Yahoo indicated it intended to hold on to its investment in the Alibaba Group, calling it an "important long-term way to participate in the China market."

A company owned by the founders of Skype has filed a copyright suit against the Internet phone service and parent eBay, an action that could crimp plans to sell Skype for about $2 billion to a group of private investors.

Joltid Ltd., owned by Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, filed the suit Wednesday in the Northern California U.S. District Court. They allege Skype violated an agreement related to the use of peer-to-peer communication technology that Skype licensed from Joltid for use in its software, which routes calls over the Web.

Friis and Zennstrom sold Skype to eBay for $2.6 billion in 2005 and left the company a couple of years later.

Joltid is seeking an injunction on Skype's use of the technology as well as damages it says could total more than $75 million per day.

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck areas of West Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, with tremors felt as far away as Malaysia and Medan in North Sumatra.

The Geophysics, Climatology and Meteorology Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the quake was 71 kilometers below sea level and 78 kilometers northwest of Padang.

Esti, an analyst from BMKG Medan, told Antara state news agency the quake occurred at 5:17 p.m. but had not triggered to any tsunamis.

The nation’s larget telcom operator PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) is set to change its logo next month to replace its old-fashioned trademark and go for a more modern approach to marketing.

State Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Sofyan Djalil revealed the plan last week to reporters, following reports from the company’s management that a fresh style was being developed and about to be implemented.

Telkom is a state company, with 51 percent of its stake controlled by central government.

“They [Telkom] have reported to the government that they will change their logo, I don’t know exactly when but it will happen soon,” he said.

Sofyan welcomed the company’s plan, realizing that Telkom’s current logo was “very old.”

The current Telkom logo dates back to 1991 and this decision means that the state-owned enterprise wants a more modern image in tune with better positioning in an increasingly competitive and fast-changing telecommunications market.

When questions on this were put to the company, Telkom public and marketing communication vice president Eddy Kurnia confirmed the proposed image revitalization plan to The Jakarta Post.

“It will be in mid [October],” he said on the phone.

However, he refused to go into detail as to why the company needed to invest time, effort and finance into changing and updating the company’s logo.

He also said that the change was made to get rid of Telkom’ old image and replace it using a fresh and new logo. However experts noted that Telkom was experiencing falling profits and increased costs in a tougher market.

Telkom’s net profit fell to Rp 6.04 trillion (US$628.16 million) in the first semester of this year from Rp 6.23 trillion in the same period last year, mainly because operating expenses increased by 7.6 percent to Rp 19.09 trillion.

The rise in operating expenses led to the company’s net operating income dropping by 7.1 percent to Rp 11.5 trillion.

In these circumstances a re-vamped marketing approach could help consolidate sales and revenue.

Jakarta’s tiny Uzbek community celebrated Monday its 18th anniversary of its Independence Day joyfully in a big way with hundreds of friends of Uzbekistan and members of the diplomatic corps in Jakarta.

Uzbekistan’s National Day actually fell on Sept. 1. Due to the holy month of Ramadan, the Uzbekistan Embassy postponed the celebrations.

This most populous Central Asian country gained independence from the Soviet Union on Sept. 1, 1991.
Uzbek Ambassador to Indonesia Shavkat Jamolov said that this year Uzbekistan also celebrating the 2,200th anniversary of the founding of the Uzbek capital, Tashkent.

“We’re very happy to have two celebrations at once [National Day and the anniversary of Tashkent],” the ambassador told Mantiki-network.

“We invited a special Uzbek chef who has prepared special Uzbek meal with pilao and samosa.”

Another important aspect of the reception was that it was held at the JW Marriott Hotel, the first diplomatic reception since the July bombings there, and after the long Idul Fitri holidays.

Forestry students from 32 countries got together in Bogor, West Java, to attend the 37th International Forestry Student Symposium (IFSS) from July 27 to Aug. 9.

The 90 students gathered at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture's (IPB) campus to discuss various forestry issues and to initiate reforestation programs.

The students came from Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, France, Finland, Australia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, as well as host Indonesia, among other places.

The coordinator of this year's symposium, Akhmad Viko Zakhary Santosa, a Gajah Mada University student, said that the event was jointly organized by his university and the IPB.

Viko said that the symposium was held annually to unite forestry students from the 48 member countries members of the International Forestry Students Association (IFSA). Last year's event was held in Bulgaria.

The meeting was aimed at generating ideas about how to sustain forests, mitigate the impacts of climate change and conserve the Earth's lungs.

The students also inspected a conservation project in Telaga village, which is part of the Kerawang industrial zone and visited a pulp and paper factory in Kerawang regency, Gunung Walat, IPB's education forest in Sukabumi, the Alas Purwo National Park in Yogyakarta and, finally, the Bogor Botanical Gardens.

"Through this international symposium we students want to deliver a message that the challenge and opportunity the Indonesian forests are now dealing with is part of the solution to the global forestry issues.

"The success of global environment preservation depends on forestry management in Indonesia where the government, industries and the people are involved," Viko said.

Julie Venne of Laval University, Canada, said that Indonesia has the world's most beautiful tropical forests and that it was lucky to have such vast areas of forests, but cautioned that they should be protected.

"I also admire the agro forestry in Telaga village," said Julie at the village.

Coordinator of the conservation project, IBG Permana, said the Telaga Village project is the work of 90 companies in the Kerawang International Industry City. Various trees for harvest are planted in a 3-hectare area of the industrial zone, which also features a model training facility for agro forestry, rice and fish cultivation.
